Puerto Vallarta’s Municipal Sub-Directorate of Sexual Diversity has invited the community to participate in a beach cleanup at Los Muertos Beach this Saturday, June 20, 2026, marking the official launch of a long-term environmental stewardship initiative. The cleanup will begin at 8:30 a.m. near the iconic «Caballito de Mar» (Seahorse) sculpture, located in the city’s Zona Romántica neighborhood and LGBTQ+ district.
Supported by Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the project goes beyond a one-time volunteer event. According to Carlos Plascencia, head of the Sub-Directorate of Sexual Diversity, the city office is formally adopting this section of the coastline.
«Through an official agreement with Semarnat, we will assume the responsibility of consistently caring for this public, natural space,» Plascencia said. «This gives us the opportunity to use it as a venue for community activities like soccer and volleyball tournaments. Our commitment when holding these events is to use only organic and natural materials for any temporary infrastructure to ensure zero negative environmental impact.»
Participants attending the June 20 event are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes and hats. Organizers advise volunteers to bring their own work gloves, reusable water bottles and additional trash bags. While the Sub-Directorate will provide some plastic collection bags, individual contributions help minimize resource strain.
Established by the current municipal administration, the Sub-Directorate of Sexual Diversity operates as a public agency dedicated to supporting the local LGBTQ+ community by promoting visibility and enhancing quality of life through civic and cultural initiatives. The agency’s main office is located directly above Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Zona Romántica. Regular operating hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
